3D Scanning and Printing

This week assignment is to learn 3D Scanning and Printing.

3D Printing

My first task was to learn about 3D printing, different technologies involved etc. These are the technologies which i have gone through in 3D printing.

1.Stereolithography

2.Fused-Deposition Molding (FDM)

3.Extrusion

4.Contour Crafting

Testing 3D Printer Limits.

Next group assignment is to test the 3D printer Limits. The printer available in our Lab is ULTIMAKER 2.


In order to test the machine we looked for shapes available on Thinkiverse.

Next step is to import STL file in CURA. Cura is used to convert STL file into G code. Ultimaker 2 accepts images in the form of G-code.To download Cura for 32 bit first i have downloaded cura 2.4.0. This version of cura was not working properly in my laptop. So Cura 2.3.1 was the solution for this problem, which i used to convert STL file into G code. Below you can find the snapshot of test project imported in CURA.


The print took approximately 40mins to complete. below you can find the snapshot of the printed image.


Test Results

After printing the test image in Ultimaker 2, the observations made from the printed image are given below.

Size of the object: 2x50x30mm

Result: Matched

Hole size: 3 holes (3/4/5mm)

Result: Dimension matched

Nut size: M4

Result: Dimension matched

fine details:pyramide,cone, all numbers

Result: Matched

rounded print: wave, half sphere

Result: Matched

Minimum distance & walls: 0.1/0.2/0.3/0.4/0.5/0.6/0.7 mm

Result: Only 0.4/0.5/0.6/0.7 minimum distance and walls are coming accurate.

Ovehang: 25/30/35/40/45 degree

Result: 25/30 degree overhang was not proper.

bridge print: 2/4/8/16/mm

Result:Only 2mm bridge print is correct. The Bridge print 4,8,16 mm is of lesser strength.

surface: all flat parts

Result: Matched

Next part of the assignment was to print objects which cannot be created subtractively. For this the selected object is shown below.

I used SolidWorks to create 3D model of the object. The snapshot of the model while working in SolidWorks is shown below.


The snapshot of the file in CURA 2.3.1 is shown below.


The first trial which is done by me is shown below. In this actually the material got finished in between the printing which i realized afterwards. I changed the material to ABS but it didn't stuck with PLA which is used before. As a result 2-3 layers of printing was missed and the while model was damaged.

Next trial was with ABS in which again there was a problem. I didn't applied the sticky material to the platform of the printer as a result the material bended.

Finally, resolving all the problems the 3D printed material is shown below.

This object cannot be made using subtractive manufacturing or 4 axes machining as the walls for this is very thin, and the waste of the material will be more.

3D Scanning

Using XBox Kinect

First step is to download the necessary files for this machine to work in your system.

Download (for 32 bit)

1.KinectSDK-v1.8-Setup.exe

2.KinectDeveloperToolkit-v1.8.0-Setup.exe

3.Microsoft_KinectRuntime-v1.6-Setup.exe

4.Skanect-1.7.0-win32.exe

I scan myself to create 3D model.Below you can find the scanned images using Skanect.


Since i was using trail version of Skancet, the error prompted to me while saving is shown below.

Using Autodesk Remake

I am going to scan the object which is shown below using Autodesk remake.

1.First task is to download Autodesk Remake. I have used the trail version and downloaded it from https://remake.autodesk.com/try-remake

2.Next step is to click different photographs of the object from different angles.

3. Then i used Remake to process the image to form mesh of the object.

Using VisualSFM (Photogrametry)

Next i tried to scan object using VisualSFM.To install Visual SFM follow the instruction given on http://ccwu.me/vsfm/install.html

In this again i captured lots of image of the object from different angles.Run a image feature detection algorithm, match the features from different images and make relations, guess the angles of the camera and the distance of the objects and features from the camera from the pictures used and try to put together all of them in a point cloud that satisfies the constraints and guesses.

For this i am going to scan the image shown below.

I used VLC player in windows to capture images from 1 minute vedio which i created for my object. To obtain the dense point cloud i followed the instruction given on http://ccwu.me/vsfm/doc.html
